WINNERS of The Northern Echo’s Best Café Awards can be revealed.

Whether it’s because of perfectly roasted coffee, a wide selection of tea, delicious food or a friendly welcome, readers of The Northern Echo have crowned The Diner, in Darlington Market, the North-East’s best café.

The Diner is a traditional café reflecting its market town roots, home of the famous Darlington Savoury, a sandwich containing sausage meat and onions, since 1938, and boasts a friendly reputation.

“It is fantastic news that The Diner won the Best Café Award 2020, there was a lot of competition for this award and it is great that customers voted for their favourite café,” Alex Nicholson, who manages the market on behalf of MAM Darlington, said.

“The Diner is run by Sam and Alex, who are very hard working and their aim is provide a café with good food, welcoming both new and regular people.”

Fans of the infamous Savoury can now also buy it from the Diner and bake it at home.
